Education on Stress and Trauma
The Stress and Trauma Research and Education Institute (STREI), based on patient data, including a substantial component from the military and war veterans, is now in the process of establishing and implementing a program by which health care providers can access our data base and obtain educational materials specific to their discipline. Our data indicate that the PTSD presentation in civilians differ from symptom observations of this condition in military and veteran populations.
Mini-workshops presented by the faculty of STREI have been well-received and already play a valuable role in the continuing education of health care professionals within their disciplines to recognize, identify, and refer adult-onset PTSD cases to the appropriate treatment facilities within their communities.
The neuropsychiatrist, neurologist, sleep disorders specialist and clinical psychologist developed an integrated medical and psychological models for the assessment and treatment of adult onset PTSD in the civilian population as well as for military service-related PTSD. These models include directing appropriate clinical attention to the variety of other concomitant medical conditions, including mild traumatic brain injury and chronic pain, prevalent in PTSD sufferers.
